Ballast, track and signalling work share one possession

On 4 November 2026, the Australian Rail Track Corporation announced that the Sydney–Melbourne corridor would close between Chullora and Tottenham Junction from 11.30 pm on Friday 6 November to 2 am on Tuesday 10 November. Around 1,000 specialists are expected to work across 112 sites in New South Wales and 10 in Victoria.

ARTC’s programme includes ballast replacement at four locations between Picton and Joppa Junction, resurfacing more than 25 km between Sydney and Cootamundra, and rail replacement around Moss Vale. Work on the Sydney–Narromine–Albury cabling upgrade is also planned. Coaches are due to replace affected NSW TrainLink and V/Line services.

Why it matters. Bundling the activities gives the delivery teams a single window for plant access, track work and signalling interfaces. ARTC attributes an 88-minute journey-time reduction to works over the past year. The November possession builds on that programme and its results will depend on the work completed and any subsequent changes to operating restrictions. ARTC announcement, 4 November
