Agbrigg Road bridge to be exchanged over Christmas

Network Rail announced on 5 November 2026 a £5 million replacement of the rail bridge over Agbrigg Road in Wakefield. The existing bridge is subject to a weight restriction and monitoring. The new structure is to be prepared at a compound near Sandal & Agbrigg station before installation.

Main replacement work is scheduled from the early hours of 24 December until 8 am on 27 December. The deck will arrive in two sections, followed by waterproofing, drainage and reinstatement of the railway. The wider programme, including highway and utility work, is expected to continue until February 2027.

Why it matters. The rail possession covers the bridge exchange, while the surrounding programme includes access restrictions and utility interfaces over a longer period. The distinction matters for both work-package planning and local travel. Network Rail announcement, 5 November
