Sediment basin scheduled for the ferry off-season

Transport Canada announced on 23 October 2026 that it had awarded Sani-Sable a C$7.3 million contract for a sediment holding basin west of the Wood Islands ferry terminal. The proposed basin is approximately 150 by 280 metres, with capacity close to 125,000 cubic metres. It will hold and filter material from routine maintenance dredging.

Construction is expected to start in November, with completion planned before ferry services resume in spring 2027. Transport Canada expects the work to take place mainly outside the operating season and does not anticipate a service interruption.

Why it matters. The new basin gives the terminal a dedicated land-based location for managing material removed to maintain vessel access. The seasonal work window ties the civil works programme to the restart of the Wood Islands–Caribou route. Transport Canada announcement, 23 October
