Church Fenton Bridge Replacement Takes Shape During Rail Closures

/ Ali Eskandari

The Transpennine Route Upgrade has set out a staged replacement of Common Lane bridge at Church Fenton, using planned railway closures to remove the old structure and install its replacement.

The published programme scheduled removal of the existing metal deck and brick arch for 10–11 October, followed by the first section of the new bridge on 17–18 October. A nine-day railway closure from 24 October to 1 November was planned for the remaining beams, deck, parapets and overhead line equipment supports. The project notes that dates can change.

The sequence illustrates the importance of preparation before a rail possession: utility diversions, crane access and safe pedestrian arrangements all need to be coordinated before heavy lifting begins. The published plan also lists further construction and waterproofing through December. Completion of each activity should be confirmed against later project updates.
