Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have agreed to explore stronger electricity interconnection and power trading, according to an October report by MEED.

The memorandum of understanding calls for technical, economic and environmental feasibility studies, as well as coordination with other Gulf Cooperation Council members. A feasibility agreement is an early step; it is not in itself a commitment to build a particular new line.
MEED also reported a separate 96-kilometre, double-circuit 400 kV overhead line contract between the Al-Silaa substation in Abu Dhabi and the Salwa substation in Saudi Arabia. Transmission projects bring civil works, foundations, access and electrical-system interfaces together, making early coordination across disciplines significant.
